September Australian Insulin Pump changes

There have been a couple of developments in the Australian pump market recently, so two of this site’s reference articles have been updated:

The changes include:

Accu-Chek Combo

The Accu-Chek Combo pump is no longer being sold in Australia. Warranty and support will continue for 4 years, but there will be no new pump starts. Based on news from overseas, we’d expected this to happen by the end of the year, although there was no firm information available about timing. It’s now finally happened.

This means that there is currently no health-insurance-supported loopable pump available in Australia.

Omnipod DASH

The Omnipod has been picking up users, although it’s not currently supported by health insurance or by NDSS. It’s expensive, but each pod lasts 3 days so it’s something that can be used as “adjunctive therapy”. I’m now officially an Omnipod user and have a box of them, but don’t plan on using them all the time.
